Shoulder Inflammation & Sprain
What are common causes of Shoulder Pain?
The shoulder joint is the most mobile joint of the body. The capsule and ligament act as stabilizers, while the muscles and tendons play a dynamic role. Rhythmic cooperation of the shoulder joints ensures the smooth movement of hand in all directions.
What are common causes of shoulder pain?
- Muscle or soft tissue strain or tear especially in rotator cuff muscles
- Shoulder impingement syndrome
- Shoulder subluxation or dislocation
- Shoulder fracture
- Abnormal repetitive over-head motions and over-loading lift
- Shoulder asteoarthritis
- Rotator cuff tear
1.Rotator cuff tear is a common injury, especially in sports like baseball or tennis, or in some jobs like painting or jobs that arm is placed over head in most of times. It usually happens if you repeat the same arm motion over and over. But it also can happen suddenly if you fall on your arm or lift something heavy.
What are rotator cuff muscles?
Rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder joint and help to keep it stable. They hold the head of the humerus in the small and shallow glenoid fossa of the shoulder. These muscles are important in shoulder movements and in maintaining shoulder stabilization.
The four muscles of rotator cuff are the supraspinatus muscle, the infraspinatus muscle, teres minor muscle, and the subscapularis muscle.
2.Shoulder impingement
Shoulder impingement occurs when the top of the shoulder (Acromion) puts pressure on the underlying soft tissues when you do over head movement. Muscle tendonitis is a common case of impingement syndrome. Tendons of the rotator cuff are subject to inflammation as a result of direct blows, excessive tensile forces, or repetitive microtrauma.
What are Causes of shoulder impingement syndrome?
- Trauma : a forceful and sudden contraction of the rotator cuff ; a fall on an outstretched arm
- Fatigue repetitive microtrauma; overuse of shoulder
- Poor posture
- Work behavior
Symptoms of shoulder impingement syndrome:
- Pain: at full shoulder elevation
- Muscle weakness
- Edema and hemorrhage
- Fatigue
- Limited shoulder range of motion
- in ability to perform normal activities
3. Shoulder dislocation: Shoulder dislocation is happened when the head of the humerus comes out of its socket as a result of a trauma or when ligaments are loose. Anterior & inferior dislocation is common type of dislocation.
What are causes of shoulder dislocation?
- Congenital factors
- Trauma : fall on an outstretched arm
- tendon rupture of the rotator cuff (especially in posterior dislocation)
- muscle weakness
- Recurrent shoulder dislocation
What are Symptoms of shoulder dislocation?
-Pain: especially during movement
-Muscle atrophy around dislocated shoulder
-decreased range of motion at shoulder joint
-Unstable shoulder joint

4) Humerus fracture
Shoulder fractures in older patients are often the result of a fall from standing height. In younger patients, shoulder fractures are often caused by a high energy injury, such as (motor vehicle accident, contact sports injury or fall)
What are Symptoms?
- Pain
- Edema
- Hemorrhage
- Reduced range of motion
- muscle Weakness due to pain and limited range of motion
5) Shoulder Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is a condition that causes joints to become painful and stiff. Osteoarthritis most often occurs in people who are over age 50. In younger people, osteoarthritis can result from a previous injury or trauma, such as a fractured or dislocated shoulder.
What Are the Symptoms of Shoulder Osteoarthritis?
- The most important symptoms of osteoarthritis is pain
- Pain while moving the shoulder and sleeping
- Limited shoulder range of motion
- Moving the shoulder might by producing noise.
Treatments of shoulder pain
Some things that you can do for relieving pain are including:
- Using painkillers such as ibuprofen
- Using ice packs to reduce inflammation and relieve pain.
- Avoiding activities that may aggravate symptoms
Depending on the cause of your shoulder pain, you may need further treatment, such as:
- physiotherapy
- injections of corticosteroids
- shoulder support or brace
- surgery
**Shoulder supports provide compression and stabilization for the upper arm

How Are Shoulder Pain Diagnosed?
- X-rays: this is uses for diagnose of shoulder arthritis, dislocation and fractures
- MRI: Magnetic resonance imaging is a procedure that can reveal problems related to soft tissue such as tendons and ligaments in the shoulder.
- CT scanning: This is sometimes used as an alternative to MRI.
- Electrodiagnostic: EMG and nerve conduction velocity (NCV) are sometimes used to diagnose shoulder pain, arm pain, numbness and tingling.
