A cervical collar, also known as a neck brace, is a medical device used to support a person's neck. Cervical collars are also used therapeutically to help realign the spinal cord and relieve pain. Hard collars are most commonly prescribed for cervical spine stabilization following either trauma, surgery, or fractures/dislocations[2]. Rigid braces are made from molded plastic with a removable padded liner in two pieces—a front and back piece—fastened with Velcro.

Indications

  • Recommended where a rigid immobilization of the cervical region is required.
  • spinal stabilization for cervical subluxation and some types of nondisplaced cervical spine fractures[3].
  • They support the chin and the occiput, this reduces the extension/flexion possibilities, especially in the end phase[4]
  • In acute pain of cervical osteoarthritis and disc herniation
  • Cervical spondylosis
  • Post-surgical support
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)

Note

  • Longtime use of hard collar should be discouraged because of the side effects (atrophy and shortening of the neck musculature) [5]. About appropriate time of using consult with your physician.
  • For sleep time we do not recommend our hard cervical collar.
  • During activity, Keep your computer monitor at eye level. Place documents you are reading into a holder at eye level.
